mun aknari facial oil

Organic skincare is paramount in achieving healthy glowing skin, in my humble opinion. My interest in skincare began at age 13, but it wasn’t until my mid 20’s that I started learning the importance of ingredients and sourcing. I was naive to believe the claims of mainstream beauty brands selling me tubes of low quality, cheap ingredients, at inflated prices.

Personally, when I use skincare, I want the most pure and effective ingredients. Wildcrafted, organic, and ethically sourced are preferred. Sourcing is a huge factor in the efficacy of herbal ingredients. Ever smelled an argan oil that was off putting and quite unpleasant? Or used an argan oil that felt thick and pore clogging? Yes, I have too and that’s why I know there are big differences in quality control.

A stand out brand for me is MUN (pronounced moon) because of their healing botanical formulas, transparency, and sourcing integrity. The creator and formulator behind MUN is Munemi Imai. See where the name MUN comes from now? As an international celebrity makeup artist, she has a unique perspective. Working with such a diverse client base she was able to see a need. Skincare that was safe, natural, multi-tasking and effective for all skin types. She found her star ingredient- prickly pear seed in Morrocco and brought her conceptualizations to fruit. Aknari was her first product and arguably still her best, again, in my humble opinion.

Today I’m going to talk about my favorite facial oil- the Aknari Youth Brightening Serum. Currently the only facial oil serum in the MUN lineup. Being a beauty blogger for a few years now, I’ve tried my share of facial oils and serums. I have enjoyed numerous formulations, but my all-time favorite is the Aknari. What makes this product unique, in a saturated market full of oil serums?

So happy you asked. Let me explain. First off, this product is multi-tasking. Aknari takes the place of a serum, day cream, night cream, primer, and eye treatment. We could all use more simplicity in our lives and less skincare steps. Am I right? You can watch how I incorporate this oil into my morning skincare routine in this video. After cleansing and toning, you press this oil onto your skin. It is key to apply the oil on damp skin, allowing the oil to penetrate and sink in. If you apply oils on dry skin, you’ll feel it just sitting and it won’t be the kind of glow you desire.

Although, I don’t believe in set skin types, as our skin is always changing. More often, skincare targeted towards oily skin like mine, tends to harm more than help. I keep my blemishes at bay through moisturizing my skin and keeping it balanced. Aknari is for all skin types. The magic of an oil is that it works with your skin to bring it what it needs and keep it balanced. This oil makes my skin look like a glowy goddess. It plumps my skin resulting in a more supple, youthful bounce. Provides an excellent base for my foundation to glide on. I didn’t expect such visible results when I began using it. I couldn’t fathom how 3 ingredients would really be worth the price tag. It wasn’t until I stopped using it that I realized how much I loved it.

Furthermore, there are 3 potent, yet gentle ingredients: Prickly Pear Seed Oil*, Argan Oil*, Bulgarian Rose Flower Oil* [*Certified Organic]. In the past, I was under the false pretense that more {active} ingredients meant better results. The issue with a long ingredients list, even when it’s all natural and wonderful, is that there is a bigger risk of reaction. There is such a thing, as too much of a good thing. Our skin barrier is sensitive and too many active ingredients and essential oils will irritate most people’s skin. Especially when layering with several other products full of dozens of botanical ingredients. Not all botanicals work in synergy together. Throw in acids, and its major overload for the skin.

My current philosophy of, ‘less is more,’ has been more effective in achieving a balanced complexion and minimal breakouts. I am extremely breakout prone and very conscious of every product I apply on my skin after battling cystic acne for 10 years. I still enjoy my active botanical masks and balms, but only when layered with MUN or on their own. Aknari pairs very well with acids because of it’s non irritating and minimal formula. I do love my aha’s!

Diving into ingredients more closely, in order of greatest to least:

Prickly Pear Seed Oil comes from the prickly pear cactus. Having lived in Phoenix, I’ve experienced the beauty of the pink blossoms in the spring and summer. One can clearly see how prickly pear runs rampant in Az, making it a sustainable plant to harvest.  Munemi, founder of MUN explains,

prickly pear cactus, powerful anti aging skincare oil

“[Prickly pear seed oil] reduces the appearance of fine lines, helps prevent premature wrinkle formation, brightens dark under-eye circles, calms redness, helps relieve sunburn, and brightens and evens complexion. The vitamin E found in prickly pear seed oil is the highest of any plant oil on the market (3 times higher than argan oil). Prickly pear seed oil is also very high in linoleic acid (an essential fatty acid), which is proven to lighten sun-induced hyper-pigmentation, protect the skin barrier, lower water loss, and increase moisture.”

The second ingredient, Argan Oil is another favorite for many skin types because the properties lend it similar to our skin sebum. Sebum is the natural oil we produce through our glands. High quality argan oil is light in texture, little to no scent (should not smell bad), and absorbs quickly into the skin. It should not clog your pores unless it’s low quality and has added fillers. Many of the cheap oils you find on Amazon or grocery stores are not pure and will cause you undue skin stress. MUN also has 100% organic argan oil in a 6 oz bottle that you could use for everything [face, body, hair, cuticles, diy recipes] that I recommend for the more minimalist and money saving option. The bottles is huge and will last a long time.

The last ingredient, Bulgarian Rose Flower Essential Oil is the highest quality of essential rose oil. The process of extracting the oil from the petals of the Bulgarian Rose Damascena (one of the rarest flowers in the world) is the most labor intensive process in the entire rose industry, resulting in the high price tag. Rose Oil has proven as an excellent treatment for acne-prone skin due to its antiseptic and astringent properties. Its anti-inflammatory benefits will also help those that struggle with acne, inflammation and/or skin redness. Rose Oil visibly helps refine your skin’s texture, which aids in combating aging and dry skin.

This fabulous oil is full of antioxidants, which we need to replenish more and more as we age. Ever remarked how smooth a baby’s skin is? It’s full of omega fats and collagen. Unfortunately, the amount we adults produce steadily declines with age. Which is why we need help from topical treatments to aid us in the oxidation process. You know how fruit gets discolored and oxidized as it sits at room temperature and even worse out in the sun? Same goes for our skin. We are constantly being hit by free radicals in our polluted environments. Especially city dwellers that spend extended amounts of time outside. All the pollution ages our skin more rapidly, depleting our skin of nutrients.

A few more musings about MUN:

photo by MUN of the Berber woman co op

‘Aknari’ is Berber for ‘prickly pear,’ the main ingredient in this facial oil.  The prickly pear and argan oil are produced by unions of women’s co-operatives in Morocco. Made up of primarily Berber women, ages 18 to 50, the co-ops produce the Argan, Prickly Pear Seed and Olive oils used in MUN products. Profits from the co-ops support a social fund that provides tutors to teach the women how to read and write, provides scholarships for their children to attend college, and a health fund that covers healthcare costs.

All MUN products are cruelty-free, gluten free, 2 year shelf life, and safe during pregnancy. Aknari is also vegan.
